Build your very own mini rocket!
Materials needed:
Straws
Paper (try construction paper, newspaper, printer paper, etc.)
Tape
Scissors
Pencil
Preparation:
Cut paper into strips 4cm wide and 28cm long
Outline:
Starting at the eraser, wrap the strip of paper around the pencil, so it spirals from eraser to tip.
Tape the tube you've created in three places: around the pencil near the eraser, near the tip, and once in the middle.
Slide the taped tube off of the pencil.
Cut the ends of the tube so both ends are even.
Cut fins in any shape you like, and attach them to your rocket with tape.
Take the "nose" of your rocket and fold it over. Secure the fold with tape.
Slide your rocket onto the straw.
Blow through the straw to launch!
Reflect on what you've done and extend the activity:
Try different kinds of paper, different fin shapes, or numbers of fins! How far can you get your rocket to go?
If you aim straight up, how high will it go?
