Can you build a protective container to help your egg land safely?
Materials needed:
Raw eggs
Paper
Pencil or pen
Any kind of recycled materials you can find around your home
Preparation:
Create a "splash zone" where you can safely drop an egg... and easily clean up the messy aftermath. Doing this outside is ideal, but a trash bag cut open, laid flat and taped to the ground works as well.
Outline:
Sketch your container design.
Build your container. Make sure to either build it around your egg or leave a space to tuck your egg into after your design is complete.
Test your design by dropping your container (with the egg inside) from somewhere high. Your high spot can be a porch, a window, or your adult standing on a chair. Make sure you have an adult with you, to cheer you on!
Reflect on what you've done and extend this activity:
Check your results! What could you change so your egg survives the next drop? If your egg survived, what do you think helped? Could you drop it a different way (like upside-down, or on its side) and still have it survive?
